How to prepare your Shopify store for AI shopping.
Start with a small product-information audit before buying another app or replacing your Shopify theme. Check which AI channels your store can use, then make sure your products, options and delivery promises are clear and consistent. For UK retailers preparing for Christmas, this is a useful job even when a particular AI checkout feature is unavailable.
Why review this before the Christmas rush?
Shopify’s 6 October 2026 holiday-season article puts AI product discovery firmly on retailers’ planning agenda. It argues that brands need to make their products understandable to shopping assistants. This is Shopify’s view of the market, not evidence that your own customers are already buying through AI or that your sales will increase.
Our practical recommendation is to make a manageable start: review ten products you want customers to understand well. Include a bestseller, an item with several options, a made-to-order item if you sell one, and something currently unavailable. This sample can reveal whether the main problem is missing information, inconsistent data or the way your theme displays it.
What can a UK Shopify store actually use?
Shopify calls its AI sales-channel offering agentic storefronts. Its help centre says this is active by default for eligible stores, with channel controls under Sales channels > Agentic. Eligibility and the route to purchase matter: a product being discoverable does not mean every shopper can pay inside every AI service.
For example, as checked on 19 October 2026, Shopify’s Google AI Mode and Gemini guidance requires a US-based store selling to US customers for direct checkout. Customers elsewhere can discover products but are sent to the online store to purchase. That distinction makes a reliable mobile product page and checkout journey relevant to UK retailers.
Open your own channel settings and read the requirements for each service before planning an integration. Record what is available for your store, what remains restricted and who will review the settings. A UK-facing marketing page or a global announcement alone does not establish eligibility.
Check which product facts are being shared
Shopify Catalog distributes structured product information, including titles, descriptions, options, images, price and availability. Shopify also provides Catalog Mapping for information held in custom fields. A polished product page can therefore hide a separate problem: the catalogue may be drawing a key fact from a different field than the one your theme displays.
For each sample product, compare the product record, the visible page and the catalogue mapping where available. Write down any mismatch, its correct source and the person responsible for fixing it. If a dimension appears only in a custom theme section, ask how that information is represented elsewhere before assuming an assistant can use it.
Use a repeatable checklist for each product
Identity: can a customer tell what the item is without recognising your internal product name? Keep the brand or range name, then explain the product type and meaningful differences. Replace vague claims such as “perfect for every home” with facts that help someone decide whether it suits their situation.
Suitability: record the dimensions, material, capacity, compatibility or care instructions customers actually ask about. Use consistent units and identify which measurements apply to which option. Do not add a safety, sustainability or performance claim unless your business can substantiate it.
Options: check that size, colour, quantity and other variant names describe the choice accurately. Match images to the relevant option and make sold-out states clear. Check a less popular variant as carefully as the default selection.
Purchase details: compare the current price and availability wherever your store supplies them. Read the delivery and returns information beside the product. A product should not imply immediate dispatch if the actual order needs a production lead time.
Shopify’s own optimisation guidance emphasises accurate product details and current store policies. Treat the checklist above as a practical review method, not a formula that guarantees recommendations or rankings.
A worked example: a giftable home accessory
Consider a hypothetical independent UK homeware shop selling a ceramic vase. Its listing says “The Willow — a beautiful finishing touch”, while the height is written on an image and delivery timing appears only in a homepage banner. Neither a hurried shopper nor a product comparison has enough clear information to judge the item.
A more useful description might read: “Willow ceramic bud vase, 18 cm high, matte cream finish, sold individually.” The shop would then add verified dimensions, care information, the correct option image and its actual dispatch estimate in the relevant product and store fields. These details are an illustration, not facts about a Zero Labs client or a recommendation to invent attributes.
Keep seasonal promises separate from permanent product facts. If Christmas delivery has a cut-off, give the real date, the service it applies to and any exceptions where customers can find them. Assign someone to remove or update that message when it stops being accurate.
Do you need an app, a theme change or clearer content?
Use the audit findings to choose the scope. Missing specifications usually need content work. A mismatch between fields may need mapping or integration work. A mobile layout that hides options or delivery details may need a template improvement. These are different jobs, so ask for a proposal that identifies the cause before recommending software.
If your store already lets staff maintain the right information and presents it clearly, a full redesign may add little to this task. If the template prevents useful details from appearing consistently across products, a targeted theme change may be justified. Check any proposed app against the specific gap, its ongoing cost and the maintenance it introduces.
For a wider rebuild, use the Shopify redesign checklist linked below to cover navigation, existing URLs, apps and launch checks. Product information is one part of that larger decision; AI discovery alone is not a reason to replace a working store.
Review the results before changing the whole catalogue
Save the original sample and note exactly what changed. Check each updated product on a phone, select its variants and follow the journey towards checkout. Review any available channel diagnostics. An occasional AI recommendation is a spot check, not a reliable measure of discoverability across shoppers, regions or services.
Where your reporting provides channel or referrer information, compare relevant visits and completed orders, alongside customer questions about the products. Record promotions, stock changes and seasonal demand that could explain a difference. Do not attribute a Christmas sales increase to a small content edit without evidence.
Zero Labs is based in Stoke-on-Trent and works remotely with Shopify businesses across the UK. Share your store URL, the products causing confusion and any known theme limitations. We can discuss whether focused product-page improvements or a broader Shopify redesign is the appropriate next step.
