SHOPIFY STORE OWNER GUIDE / 13 OCTOBER 2026

Shopify website redesign checklist.

A practical way to plan your store redesign, protect useful pages and check the shopping journey before launch.

1. Choose the problem and the measure

Write down the reason for the redesign before choosing a theme. Is product discovery difficult, are delivery details unclear, or does the mobile layout hide key information? A specific problem helps you decide which changes are worth making.

Record a baseline using the data available in Shopify and Search Console: sessions, orders, conversion rate, search impressions and clicks. Compare equivalent time periods and account for promotions, seasonality and changes in traffic. A redesign alone does not explain every change in sales.

2. Follow a mobile shopping journey

Use a phone to start at the homepage, find a collection, choose a product variant and reach checkout. Look for unclear labels, missing information, awkward controls and content that appears too late.

Check a representative selection of products rather than only your best-looking item. Long titles, several variants, sold-out items and unusual image proportions can reveal problems a single preview misses.

3. Review products and collections

Make a list of the information customers need: what the product is, who it suits, dimensions or specifications, what is included, delivery details and your returns policy. Keep these statements accurate and easy to find.

Review collection names, navigation and available filtering against how customers shop. Product photography and useful descriptions should carry the decision; layout changes cannot replace missing product information.

4. Check themes, apps and ongoing costs

List the apps and integrations your store relies on, including reviews, subscriptions, bundles and fulfilment. Check whether they work with the proposed theme and whether custom sections need rebuilding.

Confirm theme licensing and recurring app costs before agreeing the scope. Shopify plan capabilities can limit checkout changes. Build and review theme work in an unpublished theme, while recognising that shared store settings and some apps can also affect the live store.

5. Record URLs and search information

Record important product, collection and information-page addresses, page titles and descriptions. Search Console helps identify pages that already earn visibility. Retain useful URLs and content where possible.

If an address must change, map the old URL to the most relevant replacement with a permanent redirect where Shopify supports it. Update internal links, check indexing settings and avoid sending every removed product to an unrelated homepage. Redirects reduce avoidable disruption but do not guarantee unchanged rankings.

6. Review performance and accessibility

Use PageSpeed Insights on the homepage and representative collection and product pages, on mobile and desktop. Look at the specific findings, especially large images and scripts introduced by apps. A score is a diagnostic aid rather than a ranking promise.

Check keyboard navigation, visible focus, form labels, readable contrast and useful image descriptions. Avoid unnecessary animation and review how the page behaves when a shopper prefers reduced motion.

7. Agree a launch and follow-up plan

Before publishing, review links, variants, stock states, delivery information, app behaviour and the journey to checkout. Any test order or payment needs an agreed test process. Save the previous theme and agree who can restore it if an issue appears.

After launch, confirm that key URLs work, inspect Search Console indexing and monitor orders and customer questions. Compare against your baseline over a meaningful period and make focused improvements based on the evidence.
